STRIKE VOTE

STRIKE VOTE

Dear Sisters and Brothers,

As some of you are aware, from October 23rd to October 2nd 55,000 Education Workers across the province will have the opportunity to vote.

CUPE Local 218 will be doing concurrent voting. Concurrent voting means that the membership will be voting on both Central and Local items.

WHY VOTE CONCURRENTLY: Does a strike vote mean we are going on strike locally?

No, but it does mean that our members are supporting the Local’s bargaining teams and are prepared to take job action collectively, if necessary. In sports it is sometimes said the best offense is a good defense.  Likewise, in labour movements, the best way to avoid a strike is to be prepared, otherwise known as Strike Averting.

STRIKE AVERTING: is any action that increases the Union’s chances of negotiating a decent settlement without having to walk out.

This is going to be a very difficult round of negotiations with the government and employers that want to spend as little as possible on education workers and public education.

In order to achieve the gains, both Centrally and Locally, and to sustain our collective bargaining rights we as your bargaining committees recommended you to VOTE YES.

In Solidarity,

Dennis Gibbs

President
